The flu fighter awards 2019 were held at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on 25 March. Hosted by NHS Employers chief executive, Daniel Mortimer, the awards are an opportunity to reward the hard work of flu fighter teams around England.
The 2019 award winners are:
Best flu fighter care campaign - HC - One Ltd
HC-One’s comprehensive flu campaign tackled the challenges of engaging social care staff with the flu jab head on. Incorporating their flu campaign into the wider ‘winter wellbeing’ campaign, developing a balanced flu team, and gaining buy-in from senior teams and enlisting flu champions, enabled HC-One to effectively raise awareness and engage staff effectively. Supported by innovative use of multi-level marketing channels and partnership working with key organisations, HC-One were able to achieve their most successful campaign yet.
The award was presented by Carol Mitchell from Skills for Care.
Most creative flu fighter campaign - Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust
Sandwell and West Birmingham built a buzz with their campaign based on the popularity of the Star Wars films. The creative play on words ‘#maythe4bewithyou’ in their flu campaign encouraged staff to receive their ‘four shields of protection’ by getting the flu vaccine.
The award was presented by Steve Ford, editor of the Nursing Times.
Most innovative flu fighter campaign (sponsored by Abbott) - South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
South West Yorkshire revolutionised their flu campaign to focus on the areas which motivated their staff to get the flu jab: caring for the health and wellbeing of themselves, their families, and service users. Their powerful posters featured staff tending to vulnerable patients and saw them replace the messaging of ‘comfort giver’ with ‘flu giver’ to drive the message home.
The award was presented by Abbott.
Most improved flu fighter campaign - Kings College Hospital
The flu team at Kings College expanded their team this year to take advantage of different disciplines and skill sets. The team increased the number of flu clinics, recruited a record breaking 300 peer vaccinators, and a dedicated ‘jabometer’ featured on the trust’s homepage to record divisional uptake results. This approach saw their flu vaccine uptake increase from 46 per cent to 63.2 per cent.

flu fighter champion - Kathy Robinson - Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust
Despite having recently retired, Kathy signed up to work with the team after a long career in the NHS as a paediatric nurse. She dedicated herself to full time hours for ten weeks and from day one demonstrated her abilities as a natural leader, encouraging and supporting the vaccination team. Kathy educated and encouraged trust staff with a calm and compassionate approach.
The award was presented by Kim Sunley from the Royal College of Nursing.
Best flu fighter team (sponsored by NDL) - Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals
From the trust’s chief executive to work experience students from a local high school, all hands were on deck to ensure Doncaster and Bassetlaw were able to vaccinate 75 per cent of staff in just 21 days – their fastest accomplishment yet! Their multidisciplinary team saw partnership working between communications and data specialists to ensure their campaign effectively engaged with staff.
The award was presented by Declan Grogan from NDL.
Best use of the seven elements - Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust
Sussex Community ran a comprehensive training programme for peer vaccinators, which saw an increase of 70 peer vaccinators across the trust this year. Their great use of facts and figures and flu fighter resources, allowed their communications team to provide updates about the campaign and uptake, ensuring their flu messages were spread as far and wide as possible.
