Danny Mortimer, chief executive of NHS Employers and deputy chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said:
“The results of the 2018 NHS Staff Survey are a reminder that people across the health service are working incredibly hard to provide excellent care to their patients, while managing increasing demand and complexity.
“It is a testament to the commitment of our teams, and the support of national leaders for improved pay, that we have seen much better results in certain areas compared with 2017, including engagement, satisfaction with pay and jobs, and feeling recognised and valued.
“However, we cannot ignore the fact that staff are increasingly feeling unwelcome pressure for a variety of reasons. Importantly, they are telling employers that there is still more to do to address the issue of discrimination and bullying and to support their well-being.
“The investment in the NHS confirmed by the government will go some way to alleviating pressures on our teams. However, this investment will struggle to make enough of a difference if we cannot find and keep more people: further action in the workplace is required from my members, but also from across government to grow apprenticeships, reform our pension scheme and to enable recruitment overseas."
