NHS Employers welcomes review of gross negligence manslaughter and culpable homicide

Danny Mortimer

Responding to the Independent Review of Gross Negligence Manslaughter and Culpable Homicide, Danny Mortimer, chief executive of NHS Employers, said: “Employers will welcome this report, which carefully balances an appreciation of the impact of clinical errors and mistakes on patients and their families, and our medical workforce.

“The report helpfully sets out the data regarding investigations and prosecutions for gross negligence manslaughter. The recommendations made, particularly in ensuring that the police have access to independent clinical advice, are important in improving such investigations.

“We also note the call for the NHS to improve policies, practices, and support to our clinical teams, patients and families. Employers and regulators are committed to ensuring that all our team members feel that they are part of a fair and just working culture.”
