Speak Up Month - October 2018

Nurses

We're supporting Speak Up Month this October: a national campaign by the National Guardian’s Office (NGO), which calls on NHS organisations to increase awareness of how staff can raise concerns at work.

Every NHS trust in England has a freedom to speak up guardian who can help staff to speak up. Last year, over 6,700 cases were raised to guardians.

Campaign resources are available from the NGO to help NHS organisations raise awareness of speaking up. Staff can also find out who their organisation’s guardian is on the NGO website.

We have several related resources available, including a case study about the work of Lisa Smith, a freedom to speak up guardian at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and a case study from East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust on how it has improved its organisational culture for speaking up.

Our managers’ toolkit from the 2017 Draw the Line campaign also includes support to enable open conversations about raising concerns.

Over 100 events will take place across England during Speak Up Month, including a national event held by the NGO at the House of Commons on 16 October. Look out for events near you and follow the campaign on twitter through the hashtag #speakuptome.
