Preparing staff for a digital NHS – Topol review published

Dr Eric Topol has said there is ‘no time to waste’ in ensuring NHS staff begin gaining the skills to work in a digitally led NHS.

In his review for the Secretary of State of Health and Care, Dr Topol underlines how digital healthcare technologies such as genomics, digital medicine, artificial intelligence and robotics will impact the functions of healthcare staff, enhancing their roles and giving them more time for patient care.

Topol outlines his view that education and training for staff now can deliver a better future for patients and the staff who care for them, by implementing technologies at a fast pace and on a large scale.

He sets out the steps and recommendations to prepare staff for a future in which the NHS is the world leader in revolutionary technologies.

These recommendations support the aims of the NHS Long-Term Plan, and the workforce implementation plan.

Responding to the review, our chief executive Danny Mortimer said:

“Clearly there is a lot of work ahead for employers to work with our teams and our patients to design, implement and embed new technologies to support the delivery of care to our communities.

“The deployment of technology will of course require significant resource and investment and we would repeat that this needs to be properly funded by government and not left to already stretched individual NHS trusts to dig even deeper to fund.”
