From 2019/20, the frontline healthcare worker flu vaccination campaign will form part of NHS England's / Public Health England's (PHE) winter campaign and will no longer be led by NHS Employers.

NHS Employers began the flu fighter campaign in 2010, and since has supported NHS trusts in doubling the flu vaccination uptake figures among frontline healthcare staff. The team has also supported flu fighters in social care organisations.

We’ve had some fantastic highlights during the flu fighter campaign, including some of the following.

  • Our flu bug appeared on famous locations around the country as part of our annual #jabathon social media campaign, including on Stonehenge, Tower Bridge and the Blackpool Tower.
  • We held four annual flu fighter conferences to share learning and good practice among flu leads. See highlights from our latest flu fighter conference.
  • Our annual flu fighter awards recognised the hard work and commitment of flu leads around the country in categories such as most creative campaign, most innovative and flu fighter champion.
  • And importantly, flu vaccination uptake has doubled among frontline healthcare workers from 34.7 per cent in 2010/11 to 68.7 per cent in 2018/19. This year’s uptake (2018/19) is already at 70.3 per cent or over 739,187 frontline healthcare workers, the highest level yet.

Further information on 2019/20 will be available in due course from PHE’s Campaign Resource Centre.
