Changes to local clinical excellence awards investment ratio

From 1 April 2019, the investment ratio to calculate funding to invest in new clinical excellence awards will be increased.

This will apply to the 2019 and 2020 award rounds, so employers will need to update their investment calculation formulas accordingly.

The targeting of funds was confirmed in the government’s response to the 46th Doctors’ and Dentists’ Review Body report. Published in July 2018, it stated that 0.5 per cent of the consultant pay bill would be targeted on the local clinical excellence awards (LCEA) arrangements from 2019/20.

We are working with the British Medical Association to agree and publish the necessary amendments to Schedule 30 of the terms and conditions for consultants (England) 2003, which sets out the LCEA arrangements, and associated implementation materials to reflect the increased level of investment.

Please note that the local CEA implementation materials currently held on our website have not yet been updated and republished. This work will be completed during April 2019.
