Government accepts Migration Advisory Committee recommendations

The government has accepted the Migration Advisory Committee's (MAC) recommended expansion of the shortage occupation list, which will now include all medical practitioners.

Other roles that will be added to the list as part of the Autumn immigration rules changes include:

  • occupational therapists
  • psychologists
  • radiographers
  • speech and language therapists
  • all social workers.

Nurses remain on the list having been removed from the Tier 2 cap in 2018. The government is also looking into the MAC's suggestions to introduce a scheme to facilitate migration into more remote communities, and will share further information in due course. The changes come after the MAC made its recommendations in May this year.

You can read the government's acceptance of the changes on the parliament website, as well as more information about the shortage occupation list. The current shortage occupation list is also available on Please note that any changes to the shortage occupation list are separate to the work the Home Office is currently conducting on the future immigration system.
