Pay calculation issue affecting some employees in bands 8 and 9

Finance equipment

It has been identified that some staff in bands 8 and 9, who are in receipt of a consolidated payment for 2020/21 (see table 10b, annex 2 of the NHS handbook), will have been partially underpaid in April.

This has arisen because the current payroll process calculates any enhancements using basic pay only whereas for these staff basic pay plus the consolidated payment should have been used.

Who does it affect?

Some employees in England and Wales on bands 8 and 9 where:

  • their pay on the pay scale aligns the pay points as set out in table 10b, annex 2 of the NHS handbook, and
  • they are in receipt of enhancements (for example recruitment and retention premia (RRP), unsocial hours payments, overtime, on-call, etc).

What is being done to resolve this issue?

ESR colleagues are working to resolve this issue and are working hard to ensure that a solution will be in place as soon as possible. A back payment for arrears owed will be included.

What about those in London and fringe areas who get a high cost area supplement payment?

The high cost area supplement (HCAS) component of pay is included in the calculation but any additional enhancements, such as unsocial hours or RRPs an employee is getting, will not have been included.

A further update will be provided regarding timescales once a solution has been identified.
