Update on end point assessments for nursing workforce apprenticeships

The Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IFATE) has announced further flexibilities for certain apprenticeships in response to the impact of COVID-19.

These flexibilities apply to registered nurse degree apprentices and nursing associate apprentices, reflecting the adjustments made by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in light of the pandemic.

With immediate effect and during the COVID-19 crisis, any apprentices will be regarded to have met the end point assessment (EPA) requirements and achieved their apprenticeship, meaning they no longer need to take any further assessments to complete their apprenticeships, if they have:

  • completed the NMC approved programme
  • been assessed by the NMC as having permanently met the requirements for professional registration
  • passed through the apprenticeship gateway.

This change to the EPA process will only be applied to qualifying apprentices during the COVID-19 crisis.

The measure reflects the alignment of professional registration and EPA for the registered nurse and nursing associate apprenticeship programmes.
