Supporting skilled refugees into the NHS - new pilot

NHS Employers is working with the Department of Health and Social Care and refugee non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to develop a supportive programme of work to help employers recruit skilled refugees and displaced people into NHS.

The NHS People Plan is clear that international recruitment will be vital to meeting staffing requirements. Employing skilled refugees and displaced people provides opportunities for individuals who may have faced significant hardship and also helps organisations to fill vacancies.

There are a large number of skilled and experienced medical, nurse and healthcare professional refugees and displaced people both within the UK and overseas who are incredibly keen to work in the NHS. With NGO support we aim to launch a pilot programme to match suitable candidates to vacant posts.

If your organisation is interested in becoming part of the pilot programme, are interested in this as an alternative source of recruitment, or can share existing best practice on the recruitment of refugees in the NHS, please email The closing date for pilot expressions of interest is 31 October.
