As part of Disability History Month we have published a new case study which shares the story of University Hospitals of Morecambe NHS Foundation Trust and the steps they took to improve equality and the experiences of staff living with a disability.
The trust was just meeting legal requirements in relation to its equality practice and set up a staff disability network to provide a space for lived experiences to be shared.
The network also provides an opportunity for disabled staff to be involved in reviewing the Workforce Disability Equality Standard metrics and actions, providing qualitative feedback to help the organisation understand what the data really means in reality for colleagues.
In addition, the trust developed clear guidance for managers to help improve their understanding of disability so they can support staff effectively. As a result, the trust has improved staff experience for staff living with a disability, enabling them to flourish.
