School closure childcare guidance

COVID-19 health, safety and wellbeing

The government has provided clarity on the school provisions for critical workers.

Guidance on the gov.uk website states that schools remain open for vulnerable children and the children of critical workers.

Critical workers are defined as those whose work is critical to the pandemic and EU transition response. This includes those who work in health and social care including, but not limited to, the roles listed on the gov.uk website.

Children with at least one parent or carer, who is a critical worker, can go to school or college if required, but parents should keep their children at home if they can.

In guidance provided for schools, the Department for Education make clear that there is no limit to the number of pupils who may attend, and schools should not limit attendance of these groups (page 25).

The government has also published a blog, aimed at parents, to clarify where schools remain open.

We continue to work with NHS England and NHS Improvement to ensure childcare guidance is up to date and provide answers to the most frequently asked questions.
