Change to regulation timetable for physician and anaesthesia associates

DHSC has announced that there is a delay to the timetable for regulation of physician and anaesthesia associates.

22 July 2022

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has notified stakeholders of a delay to the timetable for regulation of physician associates (PA) and anaesthesia associates (AA), which is now expected to begin in the second half of 2024.

The original plan had been to combine the legislative changes required for PA and AA with those required for the reform of the GMC’s regulation of doctors, which was due to take place later. Instead, it has been decided that the two legislative orders will be brought forward separately, to support bringing PAs and AAs into regulation as soon as possible.

Although regulation is now due to commence in the second half of 2024, this is not expected to impact the timetable for the reform of the regulatory framework for doctors.

A 12-week consultation on the draft legislation for PAs and AAs is expected in autumn 2022.
