The Home Office has announced plans to enable employers to use certified Identification Document Validation Technology (IDVT) to carry out digital identity checks on those individuals not in the scope of the Home Office online services, from 6 April 2022.
The development will align with the Disclosure and Barring Service's (DBS) proposal to enable digital identity checking within their pre-employment check process, through the introduction of its Identity Trust scheme.
From January 2022, organisations providing digital identity checking services will be able to apply to a trust framework that will set out rules and standards for organisations to follow in order to carry out safe, secure and consistent digital identity checks.
Further details can be found on the GOV.UK website.
What does this mean for now?
Until April 6 2022, employers can continue to check ID remotely as per the steps laid out in Home Office guidance.
NHS Employers will continue to update employers on developments in the digital ID checking space through latest news pages and through the workforce bulletin.
