Emergency registers to remain open

The decision to keep emergency registers open means that temporary registered healthcare professionals can continue to practise in the NHS.

23 September 2022

The Health and Social Care Secretary has announced that temporary emergency registers for healthcare professionals will remain open over for a further two years.

This applies to the emergency registers of four health professional regulators:

  • Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • General Medical Council (GMC)
  • General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)

The registers were originally introduced as part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and had been scheduled to close on 30 September 2022, but this time has now been extended.

It means that professionals currently on a temporary register can continue to practise in the NHS beyond 30 September 2022, but they are also encouraged to apply to join the relevant permanent registers.

You can see a statement and further information about the decision on the government’s website.
