Flexible working enablers

We have updated our flexible working enablers for change to support employers to embed the key changes to section 33 of the NHS terms and conditions.

4 August 2021

We have updated our flexible working enablers for change in partnership with the NHS Staff Council. This work has been done to support employers to embed the legislative changes that were announced at the staff council meeting in March 2021 to section 33 of the NHS terms and conditions: balancing work and personal life. These changes will come into effect on the 13 September 2021.

Flexible working forms a crucial part of creating modern and inclusive employment practices and one of the seven promises in the NHS People Plan sets out the ambition to give our NHS people greater choice over their working patterns, help them achieve a better work-life balance, and help the NHS remain an employer of choice.

Our ten enablers for change will help you:

  • enhance conversations on flexible working
  • bridge the gap between this vision of flexible working and implementation
  • facilitate cultural change that promotes better flexible working practices
  • ensure that the NHS People Promise is a lived reality.

Find out more about each of the enablers and access practical guidance, tips, and relevant examples of best practice in our flexible working enablers for change. Further guidance to support line managers and staff to embed these changes and enhance flexible working practices will be published in due course.
