King’s coronation bank holiday arrangements

The NHS Staff Council has published a joint statement to outline arrangements for the additional bank holiday on Monday 8 May 2023 to mark the King’s coronation.
The NHS Terms and Conditions of Service (TCS) handbook makes provisions for eight bank holidays a year in England, and outlines specific arrangements for pay and annual leave on these days. As the coronation bank holiday is an additional date, it is not included in the eight bank holidays provided for within the handbook.
For England, the Department of Health and Social Care has confirmed that it will be for local NHS organisations to determine arrangements for 8 May in terms of pay and annual leave. This reflects the position that was taken for the platinum jubilee and the Queen’s funeral last year.
The NHS Staff Council would encourage employers in England to assess the benefits of treating 8 May as an additional bank holiday for the purposes of pay and annual leave. The full position of the NHS Staff Council is outlined in the statement, and includes key considerations that could be covered as part of conversations with local trade unions on the matter.
The statement also outlines the position for Scotland and Northern Ireland, with confirmation of the position in Wales to follow.
