SAS joint negotiating committee

The Joint Negotiating Committee (SAS) employers team negotiates with the British Medical Association (BMA) on the current contract for specialty doctors and maintains the contracts for the closed SAS grades.

JNC (SAS) is temporarily on hold whilst negotiations take place for SAS contract reform. SAS contract reform is being negotiated by separate team of employer representatives. We are planning for the joint proposals to come into effect from April 2021.

Through reform we aim to attract and retain SAS doctors, and create contracts that are attractive for employers to adopt and offer doctors fulfilling careers with opportunity for progression. Further aims of reform include:

  • The opening of a national senior grade to improve career progression for senior and experienced doctors.
  • Providing opportunity for expertise gained outside of the formal training pathway to be recognised thereby offering flexible career progression.
  • Improving morale of SAS doctors by appropriately recognising and rewarding SAS doctors’ skills and experience.
  • Modernise contracts to facilitate the provision of high-quality care that meets the needs of patients.

We will keep employers informed at key milestones throughout the negotiations process.
