The role of managers in any workplace is critical. Research has shown that managers who demonstrate supportive leadership and management behaviours have a significant positive impact on wellbeing in the workplace.
This Leading Healthy Workplaces development programme is about being a supportive manager and leader and creating a healthy workplace environment.
The training programme, which ran in 2018, was developed by NHS Employers and Zeal Solutions, specifically for the ambulance service. The training programme included four modules which were delivered in eight ambulance trusts.
Use the video overviews of the modules below and the coaching questions, to test your understanding of leadership in the workplace and the importance of this in creating a happy and healthy workforce. The line manager resource to complements the training programme and encourages managers to consider the role they play in creating a positive work environment and culture.

Module 1 – What does supportive leadership mean?
This module is designed to help you become aware of supportive behaviours as well as the impact of supportive and unsupportive behaviour.
Module 2 – Perceptions and changing behaviours
This module helps to engage you in perceptions of supportive and unsupportive behaviour by exploring responses to specific situations, and how those responses can influence employee health, wellbeing and subsequent behaviour.
Module 3 - Understanding ourselves and our behaviours
This module looks at key personal factors that influence leadership responses and behaviour at work. It explores some of the key personal characteristics that have a direct influence on the way leaders approach workplace situations and the management of staff.
Module 4 – Understanding our contexts and developing cultures
This module explores how leaders can create a culture that is supportive. The module will allow leaders to identify key areas of focus for developing a culture that enables them and their staff to achieve a healthy workplace.
