Leading healthy workplaces

Equality

The role of managers in any workplace is critical. Research has shown that managers who demonstrate supportive leadership and management behaviours have a significant positive impact on wellbeing in the workplace.

Leading Healthy Workplaces is a train the trainer programme about being a supportive manager and leader and creating a healthy workplace environment.

The training programme has been developed by NHS Employers and Zeal Solutions, specifically for the ambulance service. The programme has four modules which have been delivered in eight ambulance trusts, delegates who have completed all four modules can train others in their organisation.

Take a look at a brief video overview of the four training modules below and answer the coaching questions, designed to test your understanding of leadership in the workplace and the importance of this in creating a happy and healthy workforce. We have also created a line manager resource to complement the training programme and encourage managers to consider the role they play in creating a positive work environment and culture.

  1. What does supportive leadership mean?
  2. Perceptions and changing behaviours.
  3. Understanding ourselves and our behaviours.
  4. Understanding our contexts and developing cultures.

Module 1 – What does supportive leadership mean?

This module is designed to help you become aware of supportive behaviours as well as the impact of supportive and unsupportive behaviour.

Module 2 – Perceptions and changing behaviours

This module helps to engage you in perceptions of supportive and unsupportive behaviour by exploring responses to specific situations, and how those responses can influence employee health, wellbeing and subsequent behaviour.

Module 3 - Understanding ourselves and our behaviours

This module looks at key personal factors that influence leadership responses and behaviour at work. It explores some of the key personal characteristics that have a direct influence on the way leaders approach workplace situations and the management of staff.

Module 4 – Understanding our contexts and developing cultures

This module explores how leaders can create a culture that is supportive. The module will allow leaders to identify key areas of focus for developing a culture that enables them and their staff to achieve a healthy workplace.

If you are an ambulance trust and would like to attend the Leading Healthy Workplaces trainer programme please contact healthandwellbeing@nhsemployers.org for the name of your local trainer. In the meantime please take a look at the video overviews and answer the coaching questions on the modules.
