About the NHS Streamlining Programme

About NHS streamlining

In March 2017, NHS Employers invited regional streamlining programmes and national key stakeholders to come together to share, collaborate, influence and avoid duplication of effort. There was a fantastic response to this opportunity for national co-ordination whilst retaining regional ownership and so the NHS Streamlining Programme was formed.

The National Streamlining Steering Group

The steering group coordinates the engagement with other organisations across the system, such as the Care Quality Commission to help to address any barriers at a national level for streamlining to work effectively. This influencing role avoids duplication between arms-length-bodies and also provides a comprehensive overview of streamlining, whether that be for NHS to NHS staff transfers or for junior doctors on rotation.

The group includes one member from each of the ten regions in England, as well as NHS Improvement, Health Education England, the Electronic Staff Record team and NHS Employers. The Chair of the group is Alan Duffell, Director of Workforce at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust.

The National Streamlining Operational Group

The operational group focuses on the sharing of good practice and coordination of relevant documentation. With the support of NHS Employers, it continues to deliver webinars and has successfully addressed topics on GDPR and time-to-hire.

Membership is open to STP/regional streamlining programme managers and also includes ESR, NHS Improvement, NHS Jobs and NHS Employers.

Our future focus

Junior doctors' rotational experience is a national priority. NHS Improvement has established a programme board to support further work in supporting full implementation and further test ESR/TIS interface, immunisation and vaccination data transfer and redesigning the onboarding and induction process.

Both the steering group  and operational group will continue to engage with national groups and share and learn their experience through this streamlining resource hub. All of our staff should be able to have a pleasant onboarding experience which requires the minimum amount of duplication.

If you would like to join one of these groups or if you'd like to produce a case study please email streamlining@nhsemployers.org
