Research shows that if staff are well supported, engaged and feel well they are better placed to deliver quality care to their patients. Both the Boorman Review and the Five Year Forward View highlighted the importance of NHS staff health and wellbeing and the direct impact it has on patient care. 

To demonstrate commitment to the health and wellbeing of the NHS workforce, NHS Employers organised a summit for NHS chief executives in the first full gathering of NHS leaders since the new health system came into being in April 2013.

Convened by NHS Employers and Dame Carol Black, the health and wellbeing summit brought together a range of NHS leaders from system leading organisations such as NHS England, Public Health England, and Health Education England, to discuss approaches to supporting staff health and wellbeing and to sign a pledge to continue to improve the health and wellbeing of staff who work in healthcare. 

Dame Carol Black said "The benefits of strong health and well-being programmes in the NHS go far beyond the individual. Staff whose wellbeing and health is well supported deliver better care and are more resilient and better engaged with their role. At a time when the NHS is striving to make the absolute most of its resources, getting this right is crucial. I am very pleased that the NHS leaders in the new system are getting behind this agenda so quickly.”

Following the success of the first summit, NHS Employers brought NHS leaders together again in 2014 to share knowledge and experiences about the progress being made on the staff health and wellbeing agenda in their own organisations and discuss future plans to improve staff experience, including staff engagement and wellbeing.
