Consultation on pre-employment checks for health and care volunteers

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has opened a consultation on proposed changes to pre-employment checks when appointing volunteers.

27 September 2023

The Department of Health and Social Care's (DHSC) is inviting employers to submit their views on a proposal to remove the statutory requirement for a full employment history when appointing volunteers.

The consultation is seeking views on the proposal to change the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activity) Regulations to remove the need to obtain a full employment history when appointing volunteers in health and care settings.

Views are also being sought on whether the remaining required pre-employment checks are enough to ensure the suitability of volunteer applicants.

The consultation will run until 18 November 2023 and is hosted on the gov.uk website

NHS Employers will be responding to the consultation on behalf of employers in the NHS, and we would like to hear your views to help inform our response. Please email employmentchecks@nhsemployers.org with your feedback on the proposed changes.
