Health Select Committee report on Modernising Medical Careers
NHS Employers has responded to the Health Select Committee's report on the Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) programme, welcoming its recommendation that employers should be given a more prominent role in decisions about medical training and recruitment. 60 years of the NHS campaign launch
NHS Employers launched its campaign to mark the 60th anniversary of the NHS, celebrating NHS staff and the extraordinary contribution they make, at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital's open day on Saturday. Over 1600 people attended throughout the day, with many filling in campaign postcards saying why they were proud of the NHS and its staff. (10 May 2008)

Agreement with GPs on flu pandemic resources
NHS Employers and the British Medical Association's General Practitioners Committee (GPC) have reached an agreement to ensure that should GP practices need to respond to a pandemic emergency they would not be disadvantaged if some or all routine General Medical Services (GMS) work needed to be suspended. Response to DH consultation on IMGs
NHS Employers has today submitted its response to the Department of Health's consultation on proposals for managing applications from medical graduates from outside the EEA. NHS ranks in top five most attractive employers
The NHS ranked equal third alongside MI5 in the Financial Times' top employer rankings for 2008. The desire to give something back to society was seen as a factor and the FT cited www.whatcanidowithmydegree.nhs.uk, the graduate website managed by NHS Employers, as contributing to the NHS's popularity among final year students. (1 May 2008)

DH loses House of Lords judgment on BAPIO appeal
The House of Lords today issued its judgment on the appeal brought by the Department of Health against the Court of Appeal ruling that it acted unlawfully in issuing guidance that restricted entry to postgraduate medical training for IMGs with leave to remain that did not cover the entire length of the training programme. The House of Lords dismissed the appeal by four to one. (30 April 2008)

Review of international recruitment Code of Practice
The World Health Organisation has commissioned a review of the Department of Health Code of Practice for International Recruitment of Healthcare Professionals. The review will be used to address health worker migration issues and to inform the development of a global code of practice. We are collating information from NHS organisations on how the application of the Code impacts on recruitment practices locally.
