English language requirements for immigration applications

The government has announced updated language requirement levels.

13 January 2026

On 8 January the government issued updated guidance on English language requirements for immigration routes.

Applicants must meet the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level specific for their chosen route.

For the Skilled Worker route, including the Health and Care Visa, the requirement has increased from level B1 (Intermediate) to B2 (Upper-Intermediate).

However, applicants whose previous permission as a Skilled Worker was subject to B1 requirements may continue to rely on that level when applying for permission to stay.

The full guidance can be found on the GOV.UK website.
