The winners of the 2024 Our Health Heroes Awards were announced on Tuesday 16 April at a ceremony at the QE2 Centre in London.

The awards, now in its eighth year, are organised by Skills for Health and celebrate a range of support roles in health and care.

There are 11 categories, which recognise and honour the hard work carried out daily by thousands of staff across the UK. From porters and cleaners to receptionists, gardeners and security guards, these often unsung heroes make up roughly 40 per cent of the NHS’s million plus workforce. Our Health Heroes Awards is a national celebration of their achievements and an opportunity to give thanks for the important role that they play in keeping our health service functioning.

NHS Employers sponsored the Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to Healthcare Award, which was won by Professor Philip Helliwell, a rheumatology consultant at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust , following his distinguished career dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of psoriatic arthritis (PsA).

In the same category, Elaine Allison, matron at St. Bartholomew’s Court Nursing Home took the silver award and Anthony Westacott, a learning and development manager at Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, was awarded the bronze prize.

Danny Mortimer, chief executive of NHS Employers, said:

“NHS Employers is proud to once again support the Our Health Heroes Awards for 2024. It is a special privilege to sponsor the Outstanding Lifetime Contribution to Healthcare category, recognising those who have dedicated their lives to health and care.

“I would like to pass on my sincere congratulations to Professor Helliwell, Elaine Allison and Anthony Westacott on their awards, and to thank all nominees for their contribution to the NHS and health and care services.

“Our Health Heroes is a great opportunity for us to recognise the efforts of individuals and teams across the service and celebrate the huge difference they make to patient care day in, day out.”
