Transitional pay protection under Schedule 15 of the 2016 TCS

Update regarding agreement to extend schedule 15 transitional pay protection for doctors and dentists in training until August 2026.

15 September 2025

The expiry date for schedule 15 transitional pay protection for doctors and dentists in training was 6 August 2025.

It has now been agreed in principle that schedule 15 transitional pay protection should be extended until 4 August 2026.

However, we are aware that simply extending the existing provisions would actually be disadvantageous for some doctors and dentists in the section 2 category.

NHS Employers and the BMA are discussing specific amendments to the TCS to introduce new provisions ensuring that any extension does not have unintended consequences.

Information on the new provisions extending protection will be issued very soon. We will also provide further advice on the process of identifying doctors and dentists who are likely to be eligible.

Employers should not action any new change to pay until the details of the new provisions and accompanying resources are published. Among the resources will be a tool to review eligibility.
