Job Evaluation and Equal Pay

Job evaluation (JE) is a key part of the pay system that covers NHS staff on the 2018 Terms and Conditions of Service (Agenda for Change).

It enables jobs to be matched to national job profiles or allows trusts to evaluate jobs locally to determine which pay band a post should sit.

The Job Evaluation Group is responsible for producing the NHS JE Handbook that is the comprehensive guide for organisations on job evaluation.

The NHS Job Evaluation scheme enables most NHS jobs to be matched to nationally evaluated profiles, based on information from job descriptions, person specifications and additional information.

The NHS Staff Council Job Evaluation Group (JEG) provides expert training, along with guidance and advice, to NHS trusts to support local job evaluation implementation.


Equal pay

Equal pay has been a statutory entitlement since 1970, when the Equal Pay Act came into force. The Agenda for Change pay system was introduced in October 2004 to ensure that pay in the NHS was consistent with the requirements of equal pay law.
