Reflections on our Workforce Supply Conference 2025

Find out about the main topics of discussion at the Workforce Supply conference 2025.

26 September 2025

On Wednesday 24 September 2025 we held our fifth annual virtual conference, NHS Workforce Supply in a new era: opportunities and challenges, bringing together 579 delegates to explore how workforce supply and development strategies can support the ambitions of the 10 Year Health Plan.

Across 11 sessions and with contributions from 26 speakers, the conference showcased best practice, sparked meaningful discussion, and highlighted innovative approaches to current challenges. Clear threads emerged through the day: the importance of collaborative, system-wide partnership working; and investing in local recruitment to build a resilient, future-ready workforce that supports the wellbeing of our communities.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for this engaging and inspiring day.

The variety of sessions has been enthusiastically received by attendees. Regardless of their role the link to the 10 Year Health Plan has been clear, showcasing how everything from supporting young people to developing innovative technical solutions has a role to play.

- Conference session lead

We heard from a range of individuals, organisations and systems over ten informative and insightful sessions, which delved into the three strategic shifts outlined in the 10 Year Health Plan. These themes were brought to life through the examples shared by our expert speakers:

  • We heard how NHS organisations are building a workforce fit for the future, using their role as anchor institutions and major employers in their communities to drive social impact through careers outreach and development for existing staff.
  • In embracing the move from analogue to digital, innovative solutions have led to significant savings to budget and time in the recruitment processes.
  • We heard how effective system-working and redesigning teams can support the shift in treatment to prevention.
  • By offering high quality placements in community settings, undergraduates and T level learners are being equipped with necessary skills for their future careers.

"Shows what is possible in this area despite the challenges. It's the most positive event I've been to for a while."

- Delegate

We were proud to feature diverse perspectives, including from the armed forces community and refugee support programmes, demonstrating the breadth of opportunity within NHS workforce development. The conference also platformed practical solutions and encouraged delegates to borrow ideas and solutions successfully implemented in other organisations to address their local challenges.

"This was a fantastic conference - I really valued the focus on inclusion and the fresh ideas around workforce sustainability. Lots to take back and reflect on..."
