Veterans’ support centres to launch nationwide as part of new strategy
NHS Employers welcomes the government’s launch of a major Veterans Strategy, delivering a nationwide network of Veterans’ support centres to better serve over 1.8 million veterans across the UK.
Strategy overview
- £27 million in initial government funding opened for local bids to establish VALOUR-recognised support centres.
- An overall £50 million VALOUR programme, designed to build a coordinated network across regions.
- A new £12 million fund dedicated to veteran housing through the Reducing Veteran Homelessness programme, supplemented by the extension of Operation Fortitude, which has already helped over 1,000 veterans secure housing.
How the support centres will operate
- Centres will offer in-person and online support, connecting veterans to services for health, housing, employment, finance, wellbeing, welfare, and integration.
- They will be part of a coordinated national network, linked to a new VALOUR headquarters within the Ministry of Defence and supported by regional centres and field officers.
- The first VALOUR-recognised centres are scheduled to open from spring 2026.
How NHS trusts can support the strategy
NHS organisations play a vital role in supporting the Armed Forces community. Here’s how trusts can align with the new strategy:
- Connect with local Veterans’ support centres to signpost NHS careers and health services.
- Promote Step into Health as a pathway for veterans and their families into NHS employment.
- Embed Armed Forces Covenant commitments in recruitment and wellbeing policies.
- Share good practice through NHS Employers’ Armed Forces Reservists and Step into Health networks.
By working together, trusts can help ensure veterans receive the care, employment opportunities, and wellbeing support they deserve.
