Responding to the announcement by NHS England on new measures around the access of patients’ medical records, Ben Morrin, chief executive of NHS Employers (part of the NHS Alliance), said:

“NHS employers take the issue of data breaches when accessing sensitive patient records very seriously.

“It is unacceptable. Patients and the public must be able to trust in the NHS that when any patient record is accessed, it is for a legitimate reason.

“Employers have clear policies for dealing with issues of misconduct and gross misconduct. It is vital that fact finding and investigations are swift and fair. If, in light of these measures, a local policy or protocol needs adjusting, employers will involve their local trade unions.”
