Gifty Markey
Gifty Markey is the associate chief nursing officer for mental health, learning disability, and neurodiversity at North Bristol NHS Trust. She is also joint chair of NHS England’s Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Medical Officer BME Strategic Advisory Group. With over 23 years of experience across five NHS organisations, she has led services spanning forensic mental health, crisis care, psychiatric liaison, intensive care, learning disability, autism, acute hospitals, and community services.
Originally from Ghana, Gifty studied English and theatre arts at the University of Ghana before training as a mental health nurse in the UK and completing an MSc in Leadership and Organisations in Public Services at UWE Bristol.
A Florence Nightingale Foundation Senior Scholar, she sits on the Chief Nursing Officer’s Strategic Advisory Board, contributing to the nursing and midwifery strategy. She is recognised for championing health equity, staff wellbeing, patient safety, and advancing equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Beyond her role, Gifty volunteers as a Bristol Street Pastor, and is director-at-large for the Ghanaian-Diaspora Nursing Alliance-UK.
