Professor Jill Maben

Professor of Health Services Research and Nursing, University of Surrey and Co-leader, CARES-Well

Jill is a professor of Health Services Research and Nursing at the University of Surrey, UK. She is a nurse and social scientist and her research focuses on supporting staff to care well.

Her research identified links between staff wellbeing and patient experience at the team and individual levels, and her work includes the UK’s first national evaluations of single hospital bedrooms, Freedom to Speak Up Guardians, and Schwartz Centre Rounds.

Recent studies focus on examining psychological ill-health in nurses, midwives, and paramedics (Care Under Pressure 2), and research into unprofessional behaviours in healthcare. She co-leads the 5-CARES-Well (Collaborative Action for Research-Engaging in Staff Wellbeing) National Institute for Health and Care Research project with Professor Cath Taylor to tackle staff wellbeing at the system and organisational level – working with employers to try and change culture to allow staff to thrive.
