Student development and support

Developing high quality industry placements - Bedfordshire Hospitals Trust

Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust shares how it supports students to develop confidence and understanding of health careers to ensure they have a positive industry placement experience.

Key takeaway: On induction, engage students through developing a range of fun, interactive learning sessions that build connections between the students, understand the placement environment and support their academic learning.

Supporting career progression - University Hospitals of Liverpool

University Hospitals of Liverpool has worked collaboratively with other organisations to develop an industry placement model that provides students with more choice to better inform their career aspirations and support other organisations to develop an industry placement offer.

Key takeaway: Employers can work with other organisations in their area to develop an industry placement structure that supports student’s career aspirations for example by spending some of their placement in a specialist area.

Hosting under-18s on industry placement

Creating appropriate policies to support students under the age of eighteen during industry placements is useful for addressing future workforce requirements. This video outlines the rationale for offering such opportunities and addresses common misconceptions associated with hosting younger students in the workplace.

Key takeaway: Through raising awareness within the organisation and implementing robust policies, it’s perfectly viable for students under the age of eighteen to safely complete high-quality industry placements in a variety of different placement areas.

How T Level industry placements support healthcare in the community

Colleagues at Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust (SCHT) were initially sceptical about offering T Level industry placements in the community, but after meeting the students and understanding the course content now recognise the value for both the trust and the trust.

Key takeaway: By adapting risk assessments the trust was able to facilitate students under the age of eighteen travelling in cars with members of staff to visit patients in the community. Colleagues have found visiting patients with students releases more capacity in the team, allows for more time spent with patients and the opportunity for the student to benefit from a helpful debrief after each visit.

Non-clinical T Level industry placements

Engineering T Levels in the NHS

This video explores the benefits of supporting T Level students in estates and facilities management, addresses some perceived barriers and shares top tips and guidance. With a focus on the Engineering and Manufacturing T Level route which contains several different T Level subjects that are well suited for supporting many roles that are needed within the NHS, it also looks at other T Level subjects that would be suitable in this area.

Key takeaway: Think outside the box when thinking about what areas would be suitable for students studying a certain T Level subject. For example, estates and facilities management has many IT functions that would be suitable for a student studying a Digital T Level qualification.

Industry placements in estates and facilities management

This video continues the themes of the previous one and discusses how several different T Level subjects are suitable for an industry placement in estates and facilities management and can provide students with hands-on experience across a number of different roles.

Key takeaway: High quality T Level placements can help recruitment and retain a secure and diverse estates and facilities pipeline.

Social care, residential care and the charitable sector

T Level industry placements in social care

Clifton Home, a domiciliary care company, shares positive reflections on hosting T Level students. Students spend time in the office looking at care plans, staff training and even marketing and social media as well as out in the community working directly with clients.

Key takeaway: There are opportunities for students to gain an understanding of every aspect of the business beyond personal care. A well-rounded industry placement allows students to understand how their work contributes to and is supported by different functions.

How T Level students are creating a new cycle of talent in the charity sector

Headway Gloucestershire is a local charity dedicated to improving life after brain injury through several different engagement groups such as a fatigue management group or cookery group. They took on a T Level student after engaging with a local education provider to share details of Headway’s work with students.

Key takeaway: Hosting a T Level student prompted the charity to review and strengthen its processes and services, including refining its induction plan so that new starters could contribute effectively from the outset. Students also bring fresh ideas and positive energy, creating an engaging atmosphere for staff and service users alike.
