This webinar will give chief people officers (CPOs) and deputy CPOs the opportunity to learn about the Medical Education and Training Review.

Professor Dame Jane Dacre, chair of the Medical Education and Training Review (METR) and Geoff Smith, medical director and education reform, from NHS England, will provide a high-level overview of the background to the review, emerging proposals and the planned delivery timetable.

The session will explore the aims and potential impact of these wide-reaching reforms for those organisations that employ doctors in training in England.

Eight METR working groups have been established to support the development of system-wide solutions and delivery models. These include training delivery, educators and facilities, flexibility, rotational training, career progression, clinical academic medicine, procedure heavy/ craft specialties and curricula. The scope of these working groups are summarised below.

- Training delivery: exploring how learning happens in service settings - what constitutes a training post, and whether the current training structure remains the right model. It also considers how training should balance workforce planning against individual choice, how posts are distributed geographically, and how training can extend beyond hospitals into community and virtual settings without losing quality or access.
- Educators and facilities: exploring how education and training can be effectively delivered across a wider range of settings, including community, independent sector and virtual environments, while ensuring adequate faculty support, supervision, facilities and training capacity. It will also consider how to balance service delivery with training needs and address the practical implications for educators and learners.
- Flexibility: exploring how greater flexibility can be embedded across medical education, training and career pathways, enabling individuals to move more easily between roles, specialties and stages of their career while balancing personal circumstances and service needs.
- Rotational training: exploring reforms to rotational training that improve training quality and service delivery, examining where doctors train, how long they spend in placements, and whether current rotation models provide the right balance between broad clinical experience and sustained learning.
- Career progression: exploring how career progression for doctors can be modernised to support a more flexible, inclusive and capability-based workforce, spanning training, assessment, professional development and career advancement.
- Clinical academic medicine: exploring how clinical academic training can be embedded and strengthened throughout postgraduate medical careers, including formal and informal academic pathways, integrated academic training, and opportunities for all doctors to develop research, education and quality improvement skills.
- Procedure heavy/craft specialties: exploring how expertise, aptitude and workforce capability are assessed, alongside approaches to delivering effective skills-based training. This includes the balance between service and training, academy and placement models, curriculum breadth, and the needs of small specialties and subspecialties.
- Curricula: reviewing future curriculum models to ensure doctors develop the clinical, professional and leadership capabilities needed to deliver high-quality, population-focused care across increasingly complex and multi-professional healthcare settings.
