End of GMC transition period for PAs and AAs
As the GMCs registration deadline for physician associates and anaesthesia associates approaches, find out what action employers need to take.
The two-year registration transition period will end on 13 December 2026 for physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) to join the General Medical Council’s (GMC) register before these professional titles become protected.
From 13 December 2026, it will be a criminal offence to use the titles physician associate or anaesthesia associate without GMC registration.
Key points for employers:
- The GMC has contacted current PAs and AAs who have not yet registered, to make sure they have the information they need to decide whether to apply.
- The GMC has also advised individuals that if they do not submit an application by 14 September 2026, it cannot guarantee a decision will be made before 13 December 2026.
- If a PA or AA is not registered by 13 December 2026, they must stop working under that title.
- Employers are encouraged to check the registration status of their current PAs and AAs on the GMC online register and discuss options with any PA or AA who chooses not to apply for registration.
