This comprehensive toolkit for NHS workforce leaders is a practical resource grounded in organisational psychology, organisational development and NHS learning.

It has been designed with busy leaders in mind, focusing on practical action rather than theory, and is flexible and easy to use, allowing you to dip into the areas most relevant to your context. It is fully interactive online, or can be downloaded and printed to be used offline if you prefer.

The toolkit is built around a simple learning cycle. It encourages you to reflect on your experiences, build knowledge and understanding, apply this in practical situations, and identify improvements to support ongoing development.

When to use it

You could use this toolkit when you are:

  • planning or running a team away day
  • addressing low-level conflict or incivility
  • resetting team purpose or objectives
  • tackling unclear roles or accountability
  • building effective leadership habits as a new leader
  • responding to staff survey results, high sickness or team overwhelm.

Who is this toolkit for?

This toolkit is for leaders at all levels, including ward managers, team leads, heads of service and professional leads, or anyone who plays a role in shaping how people behave, connect and work together.

How the toolkit is structured

There are seven modules, each combining personal reflection and practical application in your workplace context.

  1. Purpose and readiness
  2. Understanding culture
  3. Know yourself
  4. Work with others
  5. Lead culture change
  6. Taking action
  7. Track impact

Each module includes background context, reflection questions, practical steps, and tools and activities to support learning and development.

The modules don't need to be completed in sequence, but can be selected depending on the specific priorities and context.
