NMC to review its code of conduct and revalidation process

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has announced its intention to review and update its code of conduct and revalidation process, with a consultation planned between July and October 2026.
The NMC’s code presents the professional standards of practice and behaviour that nurses, midwives and nursing associates must uphold in order to be registered to practise in the UK.
Revalidation is a process where professionals on the NMC register must meet a set of requirements to help them continually develop and reflect on their practice, in order to maintain their registration. This takes place every three years.
The NMC has stated that a modernised code would set clearer standards in areas where practice has changed over the past decade. This could include areas such as equality, diversity and inclusion, artificial intelligence, behaviour outside of professional practice and use of social media.
Reviewing revalidation requirements will help ensure continued support of professionals to develop their practice in line with the NMC’s code and standards.
More information is available on the NMC website, including an option to register on the community interest hub for updates and by accessing the recordings of their recent webinars.
