Professional Standards Authority introduces new standards

The updated and combined standards for regulators and Accredited Registers place greater emphasis on improving patient safety and public protection.

24 March 2026

Following an extensive period of consultation and engagement, the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) has introduced a single set of standards that apply to both statutory regulators and organisations within the Accredited Registers programme from July 2026.

The PSA protects the public by improving regulation and registration of people working in health and care. Their standards are the primary framework used to assess the performance of the statutory regulators they oversee and accredit.

The updated standards place greater emphasis on improving patient safety, public protection and introduce:

  • a single, consistent set of standards for both regulators and Accredited Registers
  • clearer expectations to support transparency and accountability
  • stronger emphasis on governance, leadership and organisational culture
  • reinforced risk-based and evidence-informed approaches to professional suitability and safeguarding
  • clear expectations around collaboration and information sharing across the regulatory system
  • measures to support earlier, local resolution of concerns about registrants.

These reflect the principles set out in their updated Right-touch regulation, published last October, which emphasises the importance of the key areas highlighted in the revised standards.
