GMC publishes latest report on doctors' workplace experiences

The General Medical Council (GMC) has published its report on medical education in the UK for 2025.

7 August 2025

Today (7 August), the General Medical Council (GMC) publishes its latest report on medical education in the UK.

The regulator's report reveals that while doctors’ wellbeing has marginally improved for the second year running, significant barriers to career progression persist.

One in three doctors say they cannot advance their education, training, or careers as they wish, with heavy workloads, intense competition, and insufficient senior support cited as key obstacles.

The GMC's five calls to action for the healthcare service are:

  1. Governments and employers must work together to make sure working environments enable doctors to deliver safe and high-quality care.
  2. GPs need additional support, and general practice needs to be made a more appealing career choice.
  3. The training system must be reformed to secure a reliable supply of doctors and educators. Trainers, educators, and doctors in training need more support to protect their time for supervision, learning, and development.
  4. The GMC, alongside the wider healthcare system, must continue to address disparities in experiences between certain groups of doctors.
  5. Healthcare leaders should continue to analyse and promote understanding of how to deliver improvements that address these challenges.
