GMC publishes 'The State of Medical Education in the UK' report

The General Medical Council (GMC) has published its report about the experiences and challenges faced by doctors in the NHS.

23 June 2023

Findings in the report by the GMC show an increasing number of doctors feeling burnt out, dissatisfied and unable to cope during a period of unparallelled pressure on the health service.

The report, The State of Medical Education and Practice in the UK: Workplace Experiences 2023, also found that 44 per cent of doctors found it difficult to provide care at least once per week, in comparison to 25 per cent in 2021.

Published on Friday 23 June, the GMC recognises that while causal factors such as inadequate staffing, waiting lists and unprecedented demand can only be tackled on a wider scale it calls upon employers to make changes at a local level to improve doctors' working lives.

In its analysis, the GMC has identified a range of short- and longer-terms solutions to facilitate the development of a more sustainable workforce.
