Potential sanctions for employers regarding Medical Training Initiative

Employers are requested to take action and submit outstanding MTI forms to AoMRC to avoid certificates of sponsorship not being processed for doctors.

2 August 2023

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) has written to employers informing them of potential sanctions relating to processing certificates of sponsorship (CoS) for MTI doctors.

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges is the national sponsor for the Government Authorised Exchange visa  (formerly known as Tier 5) for the Medical Training Initiative. As part of this role the Academy is required to maintain up-to-date information on a doctor’s location.

Part of this responsibility is shared with NHS trusts/boards which keep details such as UK addresses for each doctor, and the Academy has acknowledged the help provided by employers in managing the various processes.

For the Academy to comply with its responsibilities and maintain its sponsorship license, it needs employers to complete and submit a number of forms via its online system.

Forms to be completed

Starter’s report

To be submitted within ten working days of the doctor starting work.

Exception report

To inform if there are any changes in the doctor’s circumstances.

To be submitted within ten working days after the relevant change or event has occurred.

Transfer report

If a doctor wishes to move to your trust/board.

To be submitted before the doctor starts work at your trust/board and to include approval from the local deanery and General Medical Council sponsor.

End of placement report

To be submitted within ten working days of the placement ending.

Outstanding forms

The Academy has identified a high number of outstanding forms and has issued a notification that if employers do not complete the required paperwork within the timeframes outlined from Monday 3 July 2023, the CoS will not be processed until all paperwork has been received and no reminders will be sent.

If you would like to know which reports are missing for MTI doctors at your trust/board, or if you require any further advice, please contact the academy’s MTI team mti@aomrc.org.uk
