Update to guidance on moving LEDs to permanent contracts

Following employer feedback we have made amendments to the scenario example on post-CCT roles.

Publication date: 28 October 2026

Following feedback, we have updated the guidance on transitioning locally employed doctors and dentists (LEDs) to substantive contracts, specifically scenario five, relating to fellowship roles for doctors who have recently been awarded their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).

The updated scenario recognises that, a post-CCT role designed to enable a doctor to gain further experience in a specialty or sub-specialty may be offered on a fixed-term contract of up to 12 months.

The use of this exception will be monitored and will feed into a subsequent review of the guidance which will consider the use of fixed-term resident doctor contracts for these roles in the future.
