Future NHS workforce solution transformation programme

The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) is leading a programme to identify and deliver a new NHS workforce solution which will succeed the current Electronic Staff Record (ESR) system for England and Wales.

The programme will put users and stakeholders at the heart of the new solution, and will support the national NHS workforce agenda through more effective planning, better integration and empowered decision-making through data and intelligence.

Progress to date

The programme has already completed the discovery phase, which identified the business and user needs to be included in the solution. The procurement process has commenced and a longlist of five potential suppliers identified. These have been invited to submit an initial tender for the second phase which commenced this month (July 2023).

This process will identify a new supplier to deliver and run the future NHS workforce solution, as well as taking on and running the existing ESR service until all organisations transition to the future solution.
