HCPC updated standards of proficiency

Read the latest information about what has changed with the HCPC standards of proficiency and how employers can support their staff.

13 September 2023

The Health Care Profession Council (HCPC) has updated its standards which set the threshold (entry level) requirements for the safe and effective practice of each of the 15 professions it regulates.

After a public consultation process and comprehensive review the updated standards of proficiency came into effect on 1 September 2023.

It is important for employers to reflect on the support that HCPC-registered employees might need to ensure they are ready to meet the updated standards.

Registrants are required to meet the standards when they join the register, and continue to meet them while registered, as far as they are relevant to their scope of practice.

For all the relevant professions, the key changes fall into a number of themes:

  • promoting public health and preventing ill-health
  • equality, diversity and inclusion
  • further centralising the service user
  • registrants’ mental health
  • digital skills and new technologies
  • leadership.

Full details about the changes are on the HCPC website.
