Work towards an ERS award

Trophy with stick figures

NHS organisations that would like to show their public commitment and engage further with their employees from the Armed Forces community may consider putting themselves forward for an Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) award. The awards are run by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and are a way for organisations to show their public commitment to supporting staff and potential employees that are part of the Armed Forces community. There are three levels of award that you can be nominated for: bronze, silver and gold.

Gold and silver award nominations for 2019 are now currently closed. The nomination window for these awards opens once a year with the next being Autumn 2019 for the 2020 awards process.

Bronze

Employers are eligible to self-nominate their organisation for a bronze award on the ERS website. To receive the bronze award, your organisation must:

  • have signed the Armed Forces Covenant
  • promote being a forces-friendly organisation who is open to employing reservists, service leavers (including the wounded, injured and sick), cadets, cadet forces adult volunteers, military spouses/partners and dependants.

As a bronze award holder, you will receive an electronic certificate and bronze award logos to add to your organisation’s website to advertise the commitment they have made to supporting the Armed Forces community.

Silver

To receive a silver award, your organisation must:

  • have already registered at the bronze level
  • demonstrate support for service personnel issues
  • actively communicate and uphold a positive stance towards reservist employees via established HR policies and procedures including at least five days paid/unpaid additional leave
  • show flexibility towards annual training commitments and mobilisation of reservist employees, as well as support the employment of service leavers (including the wounded, injured and sick), cadets, cadet forces adult volunteers, military spouses/partners and dependants
  • sign the Armed Forces Covenant and employ at least one member of the Armed Forces community.

If awarded, your organisation will collect their silver award certificate at a regional awards ceremony and will receive silver award logos to add to your website.

Gold

To receive a gold award, your organisation must:

  • have an existing relationship with their national account manager, regional employer engagement director (REED), or appropriate defence representative
  • proactively advocate and support defence, communicating commitment both internally to employees and externally to the wider community through established policies and examples of support
  • take a positive stance towards all service personnel during recruitment
  • enable reservists to fulfil their annual training and mobilisation commitments, providing at least 10 days additional leave for training
  • demonstrate significant support for reservists, service leavers (including the wounded, injured and sick), cadets, cadet forces adult volunteers, military spouses/partners and dependants
  • sign the Armed Forces Covenant and employ at least one member of the Armed Forces community.

In order to be nominated, your organisation must have a third party make the application. If awarded, you will be able to collect your award at a prestigious national event and receive gold award logos to display on your website.
