Morning sessions

  • Danny Mortimer, Chief Executive, NHS Employers.

  • Mary Doherty, Consultant Anaesthetist and Clinical Associate Professor at the School of Medicine, University College Dublin

  • Sheona Macleod, Director of Education and Training, NHS England.

In this session Sheona will cover the progress that has been made with the Long Term Workforce Plan and what is being considered for the plan's update.

  • Paul Da Gama, Workforce Improvement Programme Director, NHS Employers.

In this session, Paul will share the output of a report he conducted, that looks at the issues and impact on the working lives of post-graduate doctors in training. He will be asking guardians to consider how their role might be used to help address some of these concerns.

Afternoon sessions

  • Tista Chakravarty-Ganon, Principal Regional Liaison Adviser, General Medical Council (GMC).

Building on 2023’s overview of the new Good medical practice standards, in this interactive workshop, delegates will use case-based scenarios to explore responding to discriminatory behaviours – a core theme of the GMC’s new guidance.

Delegates will examine real examples to consider what might happen at their own place of work, share learning and hear about GMC's expectations and the support available. We will also consider how these behaviours impact on trainees and how guardians of safe working can provide and receive support.

  • Anju Aggarwal, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and guardian of safe working hours, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

In this interactive session we will be discussing how guardians can share knowledge and support each other, in what is often an isolated role. Anju will also share the resources that are available to support the role.

  • Opportunity for topic based discussion and networking

  • Richard Hughes, Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Associate Postgraduate Dean, NHS England north west.

Richard will be talking us through the rota fellow project he led from August 2023 to August 2024 throughout the north west. The aim of this project was to demonstrate the impact that thoughtful doctor-led rostering can make on wellbeing and access to training opportunities for doctors in training. Rota fellows were appointed to 20 hospitals via an open application process in the north west. The cohort included both doctors in training and locally employed doctors. Each rota fellow worked on a project to improve the design and delivery of a specific rota within their hospital.

  • Jacqueline Rees-Lee, Consultant Plastic and Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, Director of Medical Education and Co-Lead Digital Futures, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.

Jacqueline's session will explore the different experiences of trainee surgeons during surgical training and how we work towards changing surgical and healthcare cultures so we can work towards understanding and correcting this.

  • Dorothy Kufeji, Consultant Paediatric Surgeon and GOSW

  • Paul Wallace - Director of Employment Relations and Reward, NHS Employers
