Emergency DBS checking service end date confirmed

The temporary free-of-charge DBS service will cease in May.

14 April 2023

Legislation to end COVID-19 emergency provisions for free Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks is expected to come into effect from Thursday 11 May, meaning that Wednesday 10 May will be the last day that these types of applications will be accepted by the DBS.

Any application received by the DBS on or after 11 May will be processed through the normal route and usual fees will apply.

The DBS established the emergency DBS checking service at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to help employers recruit more quickly to roles that fulfilled the eligibility criteria.

The service has continued to be available to employers as temporary support, however, now that the original intent of the service has significantly reduced, there is no longer a requirement for these checks to be free at the point of application.

Employers should already be considering submitting applications for DBS checks via the normal chargeable route but if any delays to recruitment would impact on the delivery of patient services or care, then employers may wish to consider the Adult First service.
