GMC publishes research on post-foundation training breaks

The General Medical Council has published data from research into the trend of post-foundation training breaks in the medical workforce.

12 June 2023

The General Medical Council (GMC) reports its findings to the research into the trend of post-foundation training breaks in the medical workforce and its impact on post-graduate medical training.

The research has found that since 2017, more than half of the doctors who complete their foundation training programme do not enter immediately into a core/specialty training programme.

Often referred to as a 'foundation year 3' (FY3), this has become an increasingly popular option for junior doctors in the NHS.

The GMC surveyed over 4,000 participants as part of this research which looked at:

  • the impact of FY3 roles, particularly focusing on how FY3 might affect future career progression
  • medical education perceptions
  • whether the rising numbers of FY3 affect training post applications.

Further information as well as the key findings of the research can be found on the GMC website.
